Mission Statement Update and Meet the Team: Part 3

by on February 17, 2011

WE’VE UPDATED OUR MISSION STATEMENT, a small but significant change that we trust clarifies our aims and intentions, inserting the word “incomes” as follows:

Previous Mission Statement

5 Quid for Life exists to provide support for people with mental health difficulties who are adversely affected by changes to the UK benefits system and may thus be in danger of losing their homes or lives as a consequence of those changes.

Updated Mission Statement

5 Quid for Life exists to provide support for people with mental health difficulties who are adversely affected by changes to the UK benefits system and may thus be in danger of losing their incomes, homes or lives as a consequence of those changes.

With today’s publication of the government’s Welfare Reform Bill it’s all the more important that mentally ill people, amongst the most vulnerable members of our society, have somewhere to turn if the benefits system fails them. That’s why 5 Quid for Life exists: we are A Mental Health Safety Net.

As I prepare this post our funds stand at £1,580: thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Donations may be made via PayPal as detailed in the sidebar, where the current total is displayed.

Meet the Team: Part 3

This evening we introduce Johnathon Tinsley, our IT wizard, and Kate White, our Compliance Officer. Most other roles are fairly self-explanatory but Kate’s is perhaps a little less obvious to the uninitiated — and that’s part of what Kate’s role is about: initiation, ensuring that the rest of us understand what we’re getting into and comply with all the relevant regulations. Together with Karita, who we introduced in Meet the Team: Part 2, Kate is working on our governing document and preparing briefing papers for those of us who will soon formally become 5 Quid for Life‘s official trustees.

Everyone involved with 5 Quid for Life is a volunteer and any of us may be contacted via facebook: as usual, names are linked directly to facebook profiles. If you’re not a facebook user, please feel free to contact me, Phil Groom, via my blog and I’ll either reply directly or pass your message on to the relevant member of the team.

Johnathon Tinsley, IT Officer

Johnathon, in his early 20s, is a Linux Systems Administrator / Support Technician, best at trying to keep websites online, email flowing, and customers happy. When he’s not working, he spends his time reading or gaming, and likes nothing better than to curl up on the sofa with a good film and a mug of tea.

Johnathon hates injustice and suffering, of any kind or type, and will work heartily if he thinks he can help. Having seen the bad side of the benefits systems running against family members, and internet friends, he jumped at the chance to help those on the wrong side of the red tape.

Kate White, Compliance Officer

Kate is an Australian writer-photographer/poet who gave up chasing sheep in favour of high tea about a year ago. When asked what she writes she usually tells people it’s ‘things about stuff which people must want to read since editors seem to pay her for it’. It’s about all an Arts degree qualifies her for.

She is a professional mental health blogger over at HealthyPlace.com, and former nurse to some lovely older folks with various types of dementia and/or mental illness. Along with the occasional adventure as an amateur archaeologist, Kate likes Yoga, music and Maltesers.

She also has PTSD of the chronic, quite likely to kill you if left untreated kind. Past experience has taught her that recovery means everything, and that hope should always be on the table for people with mental health difficulties.
